Vintage Vision by Megan Mazzocco, associate editor

Located in the heart of Hollywood at the iconic W Hotel, the Delphine restaurant provides respite from the glitz and glam of the silver screen town and transports visitors to a quieter, simpler time. Mark Zeff, principal of the eponymous New York firm had the luxury of creating an autonomous identity for the restaurant - one in stark contrast to the W Hollywood - because the views from the hotel's lobby and patio into the restaurant are completely obscured. "It is far more organic with real [natural] materials versus what's going on in the lobby," says Zeff.

Delphine French bistro is a rustic vision of its refined Parisian cousin, says Zeff. "We tweaked it to look more like a bistro in the south of France." Barrel-vaulted rift-cut oak ceilings embrace patrons like a warm hug, while the floors counter and complement the curvilinear forms, which are aloft with a vibrant, geometric pattern designed by Zeff exclusively for the project. To authenticate the look, he called on Granada Tiles to produce his one-of-a-kind creation; the company's custom design and coloration produce tiles that possess a rough-hewn look. "The production process makes it look like it was hand done," says Zeff.

From Zeff's design the company creates the scale and pattern of the poured concrete tile that fits the space and their production capabilities best, and offers mock-ups to view in the space until the color and saturation are perfected - but not flawless - reminds Zeff. "The saturation of color is organic, rather than looking spanking new." While it is installed in only one orientation throughout the restaurant, Zeff's four-tile design could be oriented to form several different patters: however, this custom creation will only be found at this location, in this orientation, creating an unmistakable unique identify and branding the space.

The designer admits he had some reservations about the look of the space being to "daytime-ish"; however, the expert lighting design sets the tone after dark. "I've been once or twice at night and it's interesting," says Zeff. "It really translates well into evening." Over time, the designer anticipates the white and turquoise concrete tiles will patina, starting to wear and fade in high-trafficked areas, giving the impression of a serene setting that, like a true Hollywood classic, has gone untouched by the passage of time.
